No matter what one’s goal is on the web, having more traffic helps achieve it. Gaining more traffic, however, can be difficult to accomplish. Here are five ways to get more traffic.
1) Use social media
Social media is starting to dominate the Internet. Facebook has over 900 million active users, and Twitter has over 500 million. Users on these sites communicate with each other regularly, and if a website operator can tap into some of these circles of friends, the traffic boost can be dramatic. Start a Facebook page about your website and engage users on it. Also, start a Twitter page, find people with similar interests to follow and send Tweets about updates to your website.
2) Exchange links
One of the best ways to drive search engine traffic is to increase the number of inbound links to the website. Google, Yahoo!, Bing and other search engines use links as a metric that factors into their ranking algorithms. These sites are increasingly using only links from websites where the content is related. Find operators of websites that are focused on a topic similar to your own and ask if they would be willing to link to your site if you link to theirs.
3) Consider advertising
Depending on the website, advertising can often drive significant traffic. Pay-per-click campaigns are cheap to run and only require a small budget to try. If your website is geared toward making money, try to estimate how much it generates per targeted visitor. If it is greater than the cost per click, these campaigns might be a wise investment.
4) Interact with blogs
Find other blogs or websites similar to yours that have comment sections and give your thoughts about posts. Other posters will notice the link to your website and may check it out. If your posts are particularly informative or insightful, you will likely have more success with this technique. Further, try to see if you can get a guest blogging post.
5) Create targeted content
The phrase “content is king” is well known online. However, some content has the power to drive a tremendous volume of traffic. If you can create the definitive post explaining a particular subject, you may be able to become the de facto standard that others link to. Aim for content that can go viral.
Getting more traffic is often a long-term task. Make sure that you understand how long it can take to significantly increase traffic to your site; by maintaining focus and dedication, you will eventually be able to achieve your goals.
