You track your calories, count carbs and have a pretty serious relationship with the gym. Then a business trip comes up or you’re going out of town for the holidays. How many times have you packed your gym shoes, only never to wear them? It takes more than good intentions to stay healthy when you’re a frequent traveler.
When you have a choice of where to stay, consider the fitness facilities of your hotel. Does it have your favorite equipment? Are there restricted hours? It doesn’t matter if you’re a lawyer, teacher or retiree. Whether or not your hotel has a gym is just as important as how often the comforter is washed.
Calories Count Wherever You Are
If you’re managing your weight, you need to know exactly what you’re consuming. This will require some preparation. The best way to keep track is with a free food-tracking site or app like SparkPeople or Livestrong. The good news is that you can have your tracker with you at all times on your smartphone.
However, it gets tough when you’re constantly eating out. Whenever possible, choose a hotel with a kitchenette so you can prepare meals in your room. When eating out, view the menu ahead of time. Consult the calorie content and consider substitutions (such as asking that a stir fry is made with minimal oil).
Expect Little Support
There’s a strong push toward letting go while on vacation. If you’re traveling with friends or family, they might not support your commitment to health. Don’t let this get to you. Remember why you’re being healthy and realize that a week-long slip isn’t worth it.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t have any indulgences while on vacation. You can plan your calories around that bananas foster if you’re in New Orleans or an authentic hot dog from a vendor in New York. However, you still need to keep things in check. Get your workouts taken care of while everyone else is resting, and you’ll be energized for the next outing.
Take Advantage of Your Surroundings
It’s always good to shake up your workout, and a great time to do it is on vacation. When visiting the tropics, try a surf lesson or simply swimming in the ocean. Hiking is a must when in a mountainous area, and if skiing is nearby, you’re golden. You’ll get to really experience the beauty of the region and surprise your body with a new workout.
It’s not easy to make working out and watching what you eat a lifelong, continuous habit. However, you can do it as long as you prepare and choose your accommodations wisely. Consider your vacation or business trip an excuse to shake up your routine. Working out in a new gym or trying a local outdoor activity should be a big enough change to appreciate it.
