Earlier this month, HTC announced the One X+, an upgrade to its flagship One X phone in time for the holidays. While it’s not (yet) the 5″ 1080p smartphone we’ve been looking to see announced for the western world, the phone does offer a number of hardware and software advantages over its predecessor. Let’s take a look.
In terms of hardware, the One X+ is quite similar to the One X, with a re-coloured matte black chassis in the same shape and Beats Audio branding. Inside, there is an upgraded CPU – the fastest Tegra 3 quad-core processor yet made, the AP37. This processor runs at 1.7 GHz, compared to the 1.5 GHz of the Tegra 3 chip used in the prior version of the device. The phone also supports LTE, something that was only available in Snapdragon S4 versions of the One X sold in the US.
The One X+ also includes a larger 2,100 mAh battery and more internal storage, up to 64 GB. This is supplemented with a new front-facing camera at 1.6 megapixels (from 1.3 megapixels) that can use the phone’s ImageChip hardware for the first time, as well as a Beats amplifier that improves the response of the loudspeaker.
On the software front, the One X+ brings an upgrade to version 4.1 of Android, Jelly Bean. Jelly Bean includes a number of new features, including Project Butter speed upgrades across the OS and Google Now, a kind of eerily prescient virtual assistant.
The HTC One X+ is expected to go on sale from the end of the month, October 31st. As well as the sim-free HTC One X+ and the phone going on contract, you’ll also find that HTC One X accessories will still fit the new phone.
Of course, you might be better served to wait for a bit if you’d prefer a larger 5″ HTC phone, as we’ve seen the HTC J Butterfly announced in Japan with an incredible 1080p screen – and I’m sure we’ll see it make a western appearance soon enough.
